but I had not thought very hard about WHY Washington doesn't have congressional representation. This article has some good points, including quotes from the constitution specifically prohibiting DC having any voice in the government.
Also, on an unrelated note, this article has a very astute analysis on the different motivation between conservative and liberal thinking. Accountability for one's actions vs Limitless compassion. Interesting.

this is an awfully harsh representation of liberalism. and while I agree with some of it, I am critical of the distaste with wich the author writes that "all these leftist imperatives arise from a common commitment to protect the powerless and uplift the unfortunate."
We are to do justice, but to LOVE mercy (Micah 6:8). I agree that the left can be irrational at times, but I do not disagree with the basic impulse of reaching out to the oppressed and giving mercy to those who do not diserve it. Of course they are wrong at times, but so is the right...
I agree that the author was a little aggressive toward the liberal mindset, but I was just talking about the overall description of the two thought processes.
I do agree that we should help people who have problems in their lives, but it should NOT be through the government. That leads to exploitation and greed. It should be through charities and Churches where there is human contact and more distributed control.
