Hummer vs. Prius

So, if you're a true environmentalist, you drive a Prius, right? Moreover, you look down your nose at those gas-guzzling, whale-hating, deforesting Hummer drivers, right?

Slashdot links to a report that says, among other things
When you pool together all the combined energy it takes to drive and build a Toyota Prius, the flagship car of energy fanatics, it takes almost 50 percent more energy than a Hummer - the Prius’s arch nemesis.

This is simply too good to be true!

I especially like the part about the nickle mine in canada... desolate wasteland used for practicing moon landings. real earth friendly.

yeah, but their carbon footprint is smaller.

wait, all those ships across the oceans run on diesel dont they? crap.

Although, to be honest, I cant see a hummer driving for 300,000 miles. (nor can I see a prius lasting for 100,000 with its first gen technology)

So the end result should be that the prius costs AS MUCH AS the hummer, plus all the environmental damage from the batteries.
